Description: A Calisher & Terry 30 bore capping breech loading sporting rifle by Charles Nephew & Co. from the Reginald J Cheetham collection. Rope border engraved lock with scroll highlights around the pins and to the front of the Terry hammer with long spur and short nose, the lock signed CHARLES NEPHEW & Co. Walnut stock with chequered wrist and forend (chequering rubbed) is fitted with scroll engraved steel furniture including butt plate with trap for carrying of tools or cleaning materials (not present). Key retained browned Damascus twist steel barrel rifled with five broad grooves is fitted with a carbine ladder rear sight graduated to 1000 yards with blade foresight and sling swivel to the underside. Terry bolt action breech with tapered steel obturating plug is scroll engraved and struck with Victorian Birmingham proof marks, signed above the loading port on the right side TERRY’S PATENT 30 BORE. One of the most successful of the Victorian English capping breech loaders the Terry using a paper combustible cartridge with a waxed felt seal to the base to ensure gas tight obturation was adopted in limited numbers by the British army but also saw wide use in sporting rifles such as this one. Of around .500” calibre this is a high quality rifle manufactured for a gentleman of the mid Victorian age for use on soft skinned game of deer / antelope size. In good condition with very good bore and mechanics, stock with worn chequering and a few handling marks, barrel retaining a good amount of original brown finish. A good best quality Terry sporting rifle formerly in the Reginald Cheetham collection.
