Make : Martini Henry Yataghan Bayonet.

Description: British Ordnance issue Yataghan sword bayonet for the rifle regiments bushed to fit the Martini Henry rifle from the Reginald Cheetham collection. Hilt with press chequered leather scales has release button to the rear left side with flat retaining spring to the right. Fullered Yataghan blade is struck to the right rear with a Broad Arrow over WD next to two Enfield factory inspectors marks and 2 / 85 over Crowned VR to the left for remanufacture in February 1885 when the bayonet was converted to Martini Henry fitting from Snider / Enfield Short rifle pattern. Cross guard with muzzle ring to the top bushed to the external diameter of the Martini barrel. In its steel mounted black leather scabbard. Originally issued to the men of the elite rifle regiments with their muzzle loading Enfields and later Snider rifles the Yataghan was designed as a short sword to be used in its own right rather than as a practical bayonet, the rifles only fitting the ‘sword’ as they call it for ceremonial and guard duties. After the adoption and issue of the Martini Henry rifle to the rifle regiments the bayonets on hand were bushed to fit the new rifles and re issued. In good condition with good clean, well marked blade, working catch and a nice scabbard with all intact stitching. A good rifle regiment issue bayonet from the latter part of Victoria's reign.
