Description: .65” Lovell’s Pattern 1842 Constabulary carbine. Border engraved Pattern 1842 Lovell’s side lock with hooked spring is engraved to the front of the hammer TOWER 1847 beneath a Crowned VR and Crowned Broad Arrow Ordnance ownership mark. Walnut stock with regulation pattern brass furniture has Broad Arrow BO stamp to the right side and issue number RP 691 to the butt plate tang. Lovell’s pattern bayonet catch to the nose cap and two rammer pipes. Smooth bore browned barrel is struck with Tower Ordnance military proof marks with front sight / bayonet stud to the muzzle. A light weight carbine bore musket designed by Lovell to be issued to the men of the military police and provosts these carbines also saw wide use by civil constabularies and dock yard guards etc who needed an effective self defence arm but whose duties precluded the carrying of a full size musket. Many also saw service with the Land Transport Corps during the Crimean war and later service all over the empire with various police and para military units. In good condition with good bore and mechanics, nice clean stock and barrel finish to pleasing brown patina. A nice example of one of Lovell’s classic P42 musket series.
