Description: .577” Volunteer MkII** Snider service rifle with Enfield lock plate and chequered stock. Plain Pattern 1853 swivel link lock with Crowned VR to the tail is signed to the front of the hammer ENFIELD 1862 next to an ordnance ownership Crowned Broad Arrow mark. Walnut stock with regulation pattern brass furniture is chequered to the wrist and forend with Baddeley snag free barrel bands and square section jag clearing rod to the underside. Birmingham proofed three groove rifled barrel with ladder rear sight graduated to 1000 yards fitted to a MkII** Snider breech with Arrow S Snider trade mark to the receiver ring and correct cup faced locking hammer. Made for sale to a target shooter or volunteer soldier of the mid Victorian age this is a standard MkII** rifle other than the extra refinement of chequering to the stock to allow a better grip when range shooting in cold and wet weather. In good condition with nice sharp stock, good bore and mechanics and much blue finish to the metal work beginning to turn brown with age. A typical volunteer rifle from the height of the movements popularity in the UK when frequent rifle competitions were held all over the country for regular and volunteer soldiers to practice their skills and compete at individual and unit level.
