Make : Patt 1853 MH Bayonet.

Description: A scarce Ordnance issue Pattern 1853 socket bayonet bushed to fit the Martini Henry service rifle. Blued socket with locking ring bushed in service from .577” barrel diameter to .45” Martini barrel. Tri corn blade stamped to the top flat with an Enfield Ordnance inspection mark beneath WD under a broad arrow and opposed R sold from service mark. In its correct 1st pattern brass mounted leather scabbard with separate collar and frog studs with Broad Arrow WD stamp below the stud. Originally made to fit the P53 / Snider infantry rifles on adoption of the small bore .45” Martini the ordnance initially bushed these bayonets to fit the new rifle to use up surplus supplies on early issue Mk1 and MkII rifles. Once all of the old ’53 bayonets had been used up a new longer pattern 1876 socket was issued, newly manufactured to fit the Martini. In very good condition with clean blade, working locking ring in a nice scabbard with all intact stitching. These early model converted bayonets are now rarely seen on the market.
