Make : Pattern 1903 Bayonet.

Description: A scarce Pattern 1903 Ordnance issue bayonet to fit the SMLE service rifle marked to the Hampshire regiment (Struck through) and the famous Royal Inskilling Fusiliers by Sanderson. Hilt with screw retained wooden scales has release catch to the rear left and is stamped to the right side 1 HTS for initial issue to the 1st Battalion the Hampshire regiment which has been barred out in service and 3IN F for reissue to the 3rd Battalion the Royal Inskilling Fusiliers. Double edged spear point blade struck to the left side with a Crowned ER over 1903 and SANDERSON SHEFFIELD next to various Ordnance inspection stamps and dates. In its correct land pattern Mk1 scabbard with internal chape and steel collar, the rear stamped to the leather with a Broad Arrow EFD Enfield factory inspection mark. Adopted with the new SMLE rifle in 1903 this is simply the Pattern 1888 Long Lee bayonet adapted to fit the SMLE. However it was decided the shorter new rifle required a longer bayonet to maintain the reach of the old rifle and bayonet combination and it was replaced in service by the 1907, although the latter weapon was not so good as a fighting knife. In fair / good condition with nice clean blade, working catch and good scabbard, the hilt cross guard and scabbard collar lightly pitted. A scarce Ordnance bayonet which saw service through the great war with two famous regiments.
