Make : Poonah Horse Pistol.

Calibre : .65" Smooth Bore.

Mechanism : Percussion Muzzle Loader.

Description: A scarce .65” irregular EIC issue Indian officers and NCO’s percussion pistol to the Poonah Horse by Garden and Son of London. Border and scroll engraved lock is engraved to the front of the hammer POONAH IRREGULAR HORSE. Walnut stock with chequered grip has white metal furniture including scroll engraved trigger guard with pineapple finial; lion mask butt cap and single rammer pipe. Key retained .65” ovate smooth bore Damascus twist barrel with break off breech is engraved to the top flat GARDEN & SON 200 PICCADILLY LONDON with Birmingham Victorian proof marks struck to the underside. Swivel rammer with broad flat head to the underside. An exceptionally high quality pistol for an issue cavalry arm these Garden pistols were purchased by the Indian officers and NCOs of elite irregular horse units of the East India Company army, (who purchased their own arms and supplied their own horses but were paid much more than native troops), at a cost of 56 rupees a pair (120 shillings). These pistols were made to the best standards of the British Victorian gun trade and have advanced features such as the break off breech normally found on target and duelling pistols of the day. This pattern of pistol was quite widely purchased by the famous Scinde Irregular Horse with examples sometimes coming onto the market but only about 100 weapons (50 pairs) were issued to the Poonah Horse and so marked. This is the first example I have ever seen of a Poonah pistol. In very good condition with good bore and excellent mechanics, a nice sharp stock with old repaired small split to the front of the left hand barrel key escutcheon and fading brown finish to the barrel showing Damascus pattern. A good example of one of the scarcest of the irregular EIC issue weapons.
