Make : M1849 German issue Faschinenmesser.

Description: A scarce M1849 German issue Faschinenmesser short sword in brass mounted leather scabbard. Brass gladius pattern hilt with ribbed front face and smooth back has heavy brass S shaped serpentine cross guard. The cross guard stamped with Royal Crown over FW and a crowned W German army inspection stamp next to regimental marking 8.R.7.142. Heavy 20” long single edged unfullered blade stamped to the right side 142. In its regulation pattern brass mounted black leather scabbard, the chape stamped 5.R.10 4. A short heavy bladed sword issued in several different but similar patterns to German troops of the Victorian age the Faschinenmesser was intended foremost as a tool to cut wood etc to construct defensive positions on the battle field or to provide defence to encamped troops, although it was also a very effective weapon in its own right in close combat and well suited to domestic tasks such as chopping firewood. These 1849 models have very heavy blades weighing in at 2 ½ lbs making them very effective in their designed role. In good condition with good clean blade, well marked grip / cross guard and in a nice scabbard with all intact stitching. A scarce example of a classic German infantry weapon / tool.
